One of the guiding principles often emphasised by the Chancellor of Covenant University (CU), Dr David Oyedepo is that what people celebrate tends to appreciate. In many ways, the story of Covenant University reflects this principle. Celebration reinforces vision, sustains commitment, and attracts greater possibilities.
February 2026 marked two significant milestones in the continuing development of the institution. On 12 February, Covenant University held the groundbreaking ceremony for its College of Law Building. The event represented more than the commencement of a new physical structure. It symbolised the continued expansion of an academic vision grounded in excellence, faith, and disciplined leadership.
Shortly afterwards, on 24 February 2026, the university reached another historic moment with the groundbreaking of the College of Medicine Complex. After more than two decades of steady institutional growth, the launch of a medical college represents an important step forward in the university’s mission to contribute to education, research, and societal development. Representatives from medical centres and other distinguished guests gathered to witness what many described as the outcome of faith, resilience, and strategic execution.
Watching a Vision Take Shape
Over the past two decades, Professor Evans Osabuohien has observed Covenant University grow from a modest beginning into a vibrant academic community. What once started with a single college building, now known as the CMSS/CLDS Building, has gradually transformed into a thriving academic city.
Today the campus hosts several landmark facilities including the Senate Building, the seven-floor CURID building, the university stadium, twin lecture theatres, modern cafeterias, postgraduate hostels and dining facilities, the university guest house, and the impressive African Leadership Development Centre (ALDC) building. The addition of new colleges such as Law and Medicine represents yet another chapter in the institution’s evolving story.
Each of these developments reflects a consistent pattern of bold vision, disciplined implementation, and sustained faith in the long-term mission of the university.
A Personal Academic Journey
Alongside the institutional transformation is a personal story of professional growth. After completing the National Youth Service Corps programme, Professor Osabuohien returned to Covenant University and began his academic career as a Graduate Assistant (GA), the entry point of the academic ladder. Within the same system, he completed his Master’s degree and later secured a fully funded doctoral scholarship to Sweden. This academic journey was further strengthened through postdoctoral research in Germany.
These experiences illustrate how institutions that invest in people can create pathways for academic advancement and global scholarly engagement.
In 2016, he became one of the youngest Heads of Department in the university. In December 2017, he emerged as one of the youngest Professors in the institution. By 2020, he was recognised among the six youngest Professors in Nigeria. Presently, Professor Osabuohien is widely recognised for his scholarly contributions and research impact within his field both nationally and internationally.
Reflecting on this journey, a simple observation becomes evident:
As the system grew, he grew.
As the university expanded, his influence expanded.
As the vision advanced, his purpose advanced.
The experience of Covenant University demonstrates an important reality about thriving systems. Institutions progress when individuals remain committed to shared values and contribute consistently to collective goals.
Growth within such environments requires authenticity, diligence, and a willingness to add value continuously. When individuals align their efforts with a purposeful institutional vision, both the institution and its members advance together.
More than Physical Development
The story of Covenant University extends beyond buildings and infrastructure. It reflects a broader narrative of transformation. The institution illustrates how vision, discipline, and gratitude can translate into sustained progress over time.
The launch of the College of Law and the College of Medicine therefore represents more than expansion. It symbolises the continued pursuit of excellence and the strengthening of the university’s contribution to national and global development.
Indeed, what is celebrated often becomes strengthened.
We join Covenant University to celebrate growth, vision, and faithfulness, while positioning itself for even greater milestones in the years ahead.
Commitment to Mentorship and Knowledge Development
Beyond institutional development, Professor Osabuohien continues to contribute to knowledge development and mentorship through several academic initiatives designed to support emerging scholars, particularly the African Scholars Mentorship Network (ASMN), which he coordinate as the Founding Chair of DePECOS Institutions and Development Research Centre (DIaDeRC) .
Course on Applied Data Science (CADS 2.0)
Onboarding continues for participants interested in developing applied data science skills. Registration via this link.
African Scholars Mentorship Network (ASMN 7.0)
The seventh edition of the biannual mentorship bootcamp will take place in May 2026.

Institutions and Development Research Journal (IDeRJ)
Researchers are invited to submit manuscripts. Submission and article processing charges are currently free. Check the Journal Portal via this link
Through these initiatives, the broader objective remains clear: strengthening research capacity, mentoring the next generation of scholars, and contributing meaningfully to human and societal development.
