In an attempt at evolving a partnership with the industry, Professor Evans Osabuohien did lead a team of researchers from DePECOS Institutions and Development Research Centre (DIaDeRC) on a facility visit to largest soilless farm laboratory in the country, Soilless Farm Lab, Awowo, Abeokuta, Ogun State, Nigeria.
The laboratory founded by Samson Igbole, deploys state-of-the-art technology to minimize greenhouse gas emissions, ensure year-round food production, and boost the local economy through job creation and market innovation.
The visit, largely necessitated by the ongoing research of Mrs. Loveth Ode-Omenka, a Ph.D candidate in Economics at Covenant University, on climate change, livelihoods, and food security in Nigeria. The team met with the Monitoring and Evaluation officer, who explained the soilless farming procedures, the lab’s achievements, and its business model.
The team toured the facilities, which include over 400 green farms, storage facilities, various plant species, and infrastructures designed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
The tour ended on a positive note, with the farm officials and the DIaDeRC team exchanging contacts and discussing potential areas for future collaboration.
